The Basics
When it comes to requesting a custom commission there can be a lot of questions. Size, prices, how do I start? Below I have tried to list out the process and additional questions as best as I can. HOW DO I COMMISSION A PAINTING?
Step 1:
When you are ready to commission either a pet portrait or custom painting, fill out the contact form located at the bottom of this page or email me at katherinedgriffin@gmail.com.
Step 2:
I will then send you a questionnaire asking you about your pet or painting subject and the size of painting you want. If you are requesting a pet portrait I will also ask you to upload 2-3 photos of your pet.
Step 3:
When your questionnaire is complete, and I have your images, I will create 1-3 quick digital composites showing potential placement and composition of the finished work. An estimated completion date, between 4-6 weeks, will also be set.
Step 4:
Once you pick out a composition I will draw out the final sketch. After you approve the sketch, a non-refundable 20% down payment will be sent to you as a Paypal invoice.
Step 5:
After the invoice is paid. I will begin to paint. You will receive weekly progress photos and no other payment will be due until your painting is finished.
Step 6:
If you are unhappy with the work, you are not obligated to pay the remaining 80%. I will, however, make the painting available to purchase on my site (this has happily never happened).
WHAT ARE YOUR SIZES AND PRICES?
Sizes and prices are listed below. Please note that if two animals are included in one portrait, the price below will be increased by half the purchase price. Ex: 8 x 8 with two pets, 230 + 115 = $345 total.

HOW MUCH IS SHIPPING?
For the four smaller sized paintings shipping is $10. For the medium sizes shipping is $20. For the four larger sizes shipping will be charged on a case by case basis. If shipping is less than the charged amount, I will refund you the difference. If shipping is more, you will not be charged the difference.
CAN I FRAME MY PAINTING?
Yes! But without glass. The paintings are varnished before being sent to you. If you cover them with glass it will eventually ruin the painting.
WHAT MEDIUM DO YOU USE?
I use oil colors.
DO YOU PAINT ON CANVAS?
No. I paint on ampersand gesso boards. These boards come in four different cradle sizes. The cradle is a framing placed on the back of a flat board. Refer to the photo below.
You can choose the depth of cradle. The image below shows the different cradle sizes: no cradle (a flat board),1/2 in, 3/4 in, 1.5 in, and 2 in deep. I prefer the 3/4. It is about the thickness of an unframed canvas and can be hung on the wall with no frame.
